How many dimensions are there?
by The Tank Master
Well, there are many theories!
Some say 11, some say 24, or even infinity! This are from theories too complicated for this website. Do your own research!

Why Do We Dream?
By Lucy
While you are asleep, and unconscious part of your brain is sorting out memories, strengthening ones you need and throwing out useless junk that would otherwise clog the brain. A conscious part of the brain detects the electrical impulses, freaks out, and tries to make a story out of them. And that's why you dream!

What is Terminal Velocity, And How Does It Work?
By Nanny Sue
You might think that, if you jump of a plane, you'll just keep falling, faster and faster. WRONG! At the start, you'll accelerate, but, eventually, you'll stay at the same speed. This is what terminal velocity is. "But how?" you yell. "How does it work!"
Aha! This is where it starts to get interesting. If you're falling, the air beneath you can't get out of the way fast enough. Above you, meanwhile, air can't fill in the empty space fast enough, making a sort of vacuum. The change is pressure causes... AIR RESISTANCE! When force of the air resistance equals the force of our old friend, gravity, you will maintain a constant speed. And that's how terminal velocity works! Phew!

When a (Straight) Stick Is Half In And Half Out of a Pond, Why Does it Seem to be Bent?
By Liam
Because, as you might know, light travels in a straight line. BUT - when it is in water, the light changes direction multiple times, giving you a warped view of the stick. A posh word for the bending of the light waves is refraction.
Of course, there's a simpler explanation. Maybe the stick is actually bent!

Alnitak, Alnilam and Mintaka. They're commonly referred to as Orion's Belt. Good question!
Could You Light A Match An A Gas holder?
By Toby Lerone
No. Why? A gas holder stores natural gas - which oxygen isn't - and fire needs oxygen to burn. To make a fire, you need: fuel - which would be the gas, heat, and oxygen. You need ALL of these things to make it work. Good question!
Why Can't We See Air?
By Darryl Bacciochi
Well, actually, in a roundabout way, you can! Confused? Well, the air - or rather, the oxygen in the air - is, actually, very, very, slightly blue. But it's so slight that everybody thinks that air doesn't have colour. Which, in small amounts, is pretty much right. But - in massive amounts, you can see colour: a sky blue. Which is in... the sky! Yep - the reason the sky is blue is because of the massive amounts of air in the sky.
How Does a Newton's Cradle Work?
By Nanny Sue
Go on on our News page if you don't know what a Newton's Cradle is.
The momentum when the ball hits the next ball is transfered through the rest of the balls them until it comes out to the last ball, which swings up into the air.

Did you know...?
When the ball is lifted up into the air, it stores potential energy. As the ball falls, it uses movement energy. A posh name for movement energy is kinetic energy. Just think of the Kinect from the Xbox - that makes you move alot, and their names sound similar!
Is Glass A Solid or a Liquid?
By Mitch Ellam
It's a liquid!
If you've ever saw a antique window frame, you'll see that it's actually thicker at the bottom! This is because it's a liquid that flows, v-e-r-y slowly. However, there are alot of arguments about this, and glass has even been called a 'supercooled' liquid because of its seemingly solid state.

Will Jumping In a Falling Lift Save You?
By John Lockett
No. Sorry to disappoint you but when you jump, you'll be going at 4 miles per hour at most, while a falling lift will be hurtling at at least 30 miles per hour, so jumping would make no difference. Another way to look at it is this; if you were falling at 30 miles an hour without a lift, it makes things more clear. You see, the lift is not the problem, it's the falling. At the end of the lift, just when you hit the ground, your momentum could be weakened if you push your legs up just when it hits the ground, but you have to be impossibly accurate to execute this perfectly. And as you fall, you feel seemingly weightless, which would just be plain awesome!

What Is At The End Of THE UNIVERSE?
By Space Warlord
We don't really know for certain, but here are the main theories of how our universe will come to an end:
1) Heat Death - as the universe expands, heat gets spread out into the far ends of the universe, and we all freeze. Brr!
2) The big rip - the universe grows and grows until it expands so much that it gets ripped in half.
And finally, 3) The big crunch - the universe loses all it potential energy (which turns into the kinetic energy to make the universe expand) caused by the Big Bang and starts to collapse inwards, making the universe very dense and hot, and we burn to death. What cheery science this is!
Nice question Space Warlord! The ScienceDorks can't stop biting their fingernails in fear!

What's In Dark Chocolate That Makes It Gross?
By Charlie Bucket (I Love Chocolate)
The chocolate that YOU probably guzzle on is milk chocolate, which has powdered milk, and NOT much cocoa. The stats? About 25 to 35 percent cocoa. Also, (DO NOT let your parents read this bit if you want to convince her that chocolate is healthy!) milk chocolate has LOADS and LOADS of sugar and fats.
Dark chocolate has up to 100% cocoa content, and no - or little to no - milk. Coupled with the fact that it has less sugar and fats, it's not hard to see why you might hate it.
Like it or not, dark chocs are here to stay!

What's After Death?
By Xyra
Now, some readers probably are thinking: "Nothing - obviously!"
If you were one of these people, prepare to be amazed....
Of more than 2,000 people who were being studied, who's hearts had stopped, a breathtaking 40% were, somehow, 'aware'. So it might not be all doom and gloom. What's more, nearly one-third of the aware people recalled time slowing down or speeding up. Most said they felt... peace.
Whoa - deep! Good question!

How Do X-rays Work?
By X-ray Xyra
X-rays, basically, are high-energy rays you can't really see. Cool eh - but how does it work? The rays can pass through your skin, muscles and pretty much anything else except... bones. The result comes up on the screen and... that's how it works.
Hmm... your friends sure will be baffled when you tell them this!

Is It True That The Earth Is Slowly Moving Away From The Sun?
By Ivana
Yep - about 10cm per year. Why? Because the Sun is losing mass; it is running out of hydrogen fuel to burn on. And the less mass, the weaker the gravitational pull. Also, because of tidal forces, the Sun's spin is getting slower and slower.
"Oh no!" I hear you yell. "So we're going to float away and freeze to death!" Buuuuuuuut... you're wrong. Before that happens, the Sun will blow up into a red giant and... we'll fry.
Good question, Ivana!

What Is The 5th Dimension?
By The Maths Geek
Nice question! Okay, for the fifth time dimension:
Imagine this - a 2-D piece of paper with a 2-D person on it. Let call that person Happy Patrick. Now imagine that the piece of paper is folded into a cylinder shape. Happy Patrick could go around it without ever feeling like he passed through 3-D space! WOW! Now it's just like that for people in 4-D! The 4-D line of time feels straight, but is forever looping in probability. This probability is caused by luck, personal choices, other people's choices and influence from others.
The fifth spacial dimension:
Quite simply, parallel 4-D spaces! EASY!

If Dinosaurs Have Scales, And Everyone Says That Dinosaurs Evolved From Birds, Then Why Do Birds Have Feathers?
By Daniel
Good thinking! Actually, some dinosaurs had feathers. "But why?" I hear you cry. For one, it provides insulation - it keep the animal warm. It also would of attracted dinosaurs of a different gender; so the dinosaurs could make babies. But how did they make birds? One theory was that feathers provided just that extra bit of lift off when they're chasing prey, until one lucky dinosaur could fly - or rather, glide. They soon evolved into birds.
One example of a 'gliding dinosaur' is Archaeopteryx. It couldn't fly, but it could glide short distances. Check it out!

If Paper Is Made From Trees, Then How Are More Trees Made?
By Ellie
They plant more trees - if you look on the packets of toilet paper and stuff, it sometimes says 'when we saw one tree, we plant 3 more'! Also, pollination helps; sending its seeds to another plant which then makes a baby.
Did you know...?
In steaming rainforests, if a tree falls over, the plants are splattered. Right? Not so for the amazing stilt palm plant. Using its 'stilt' like roots, it hops out of the way. A walking plant.

Good question! It means the 'study of' in Greek. So that's why there's 'ology' in biology!
How Do People Discover If They're Right Handed Or Left? (I'm Left handed.)
By Matilda
Mostly because they keep using this hand. Babies are ambidextrous (each hand his equal) but as they get older, they start to have one hand that they have more control of. Did you know that men are more likely to be left handed than women? So that means you're more rare than a left handed boy! Nice!
How Long Did It Take To Make This Website?

My sister won't tell me what a light year is.
By Djalece
Just look at the question below. Nobody's keeping secrets from you!
What's a light year?
By Princess Perfect
What girly name! Anyway, a light year is a distance, not time. It's the distance that light travels in a year, about 5,878,499,810,000 miles.
Why do fish have scales?
By Gwacka Moley
Well, a fishes scales are covered in mucus (a fancy way of saying snot.) to protect them from fungi and bacteria. They also have another layer of scales inside them to. Slugs and snails are also covered in mucus. Ew!
If Snakes Have No eyelids, How Come Their Eyes Don't Dry Out?
By Luke
As you might know, eyelids keep your eyes damp by producing moisture. So, logically, a snakes eyes would dry out, wouldn't they? No. Snakes have transparent scales up their eyes (which they shed too.... painful!) which supply them with moisture so they can see fine. Yaaay!
Penguins and fish use similar things, to use like goggles, so they can see fine in the water. Double yay!
Intelligent question, Luke! You had even the ScienceDorks baffled!
