Biology - The Study Of Life
Biology.
An epic subject.
Oh yeah.
This is - as we've mentioned - the study of life. From the nastiest cold to the most amazing animal, Biology is a massive subject. Below are the main animal classes - click on the links to find out more about 'em.

Animal Classes...
If you're a total Dur-Dur when it come to this subject, then the stuff below will help:
Mammals
Number of species: 5,400
|
Click on the links to find out more about them in detail!
|
We fit in this group! Yep! Humans are mammals.
Mammals are warm-blooded. This means that their blood and bodies are kept warm themselves with fat or fur - not their surroundings, like most animals. Think of it like a central heating - but in our bodies.
Here is the mammal page.

Fish
Number of species: 28,000+
When you're thinking of 'fish', you might imagine playful dolphins and deadly killer whales (or orca is another name for it) but I'm going to shatter your thoughts: dolphins and whales aren't fish! They're mammals: fish have gills to help them breathe underwater, while dolphins and whales don't (they have blow holes instead).
Fish use fins to swim, and most are covered in scales.

Echinoderms
Number of species: 7,000+
This is an echinoderm - a sea urchin. Echinoderms - usually - have hard and spiky skin - the spikes can cause a nasty sting. Ouch! For legs, they have lots of tubes, arranged around a central area.
Starfish and sea cucumbers also fall into this category.

Crustacea
Number of species: 52,000+
These have a skeleton on the outside of their bodies: an exoskeleton! These protected the animal from danger as they were rock solid shell, acting like armor - nobody would want to bite into that!
Animals in this group include: crabs, lobsters and shrimps.

Arachnids
Number of species: 73,000+
Mainly, this class is filled up by everyones worst nightmare: spiders. As people who aren't scared of them say, if there was no spiders the world would be overrun by bugs. BUT - most sensible people are even scareder of scorpions!
And guess what?
Yep scorpions feature in this group, too!

Amphipia
Number of species: 6,000+
Unlike mammals, all the animals in this class are cold-blooded; they heat up and cool down with thier surroundings.
Slimy skin tends to feature in this group, so many people hate them.
And in this group, to of the slimiest, most disgusting animals are here:
Frogs and toads.
Here is the Amphibians page.

Reptiles
Number of species: 8,200+
These are also cold-blooded. Unlike mammals, whose legs are straight, these have legs that stick out the sides of their bodies. Just like most fish these have scales, and examples include the slowly plodding tortoise, and the deadly crocodile.
Birds
Number of species: 10,000+
Birds!
These are the only species other than bats and insects, that can fly.
Examples include - well - just birds!

Petrifying Plant Types
|
At the moment, we only have one plant page, Meat-eating Plants. Check it out!
|
Here are the main types of plants...
Algae
Number of species: 30,000+
These are the things that give ponds that lovely green colour. Ahhh! The sea has loads of algae - like seaweed. Yep, seaweed is another algae.
Lichens
Number of species: 25,000+
Lichens are two plants - well, one isn't and one is. Confused? Let me explain. It's basically fungi and algae living so close together, it's like... one plant. They help each other: he fungi guzzle minerals, dissolve rock and getting water, while the algae transforms sunlight into food. Ahh - all very cosy.
Liverworts and Mosses
Number of species: 23,000+
No - you're not amazingly clever for figuring out that they're different plants. But they live a similar lifestyle; just waiting in a slightly wet spot trying to stay as wet as they can. Would you want be one?
Gymnosperms
Number of species: 750 (roughly)
Impress your friends because here's how to pronounce it: Jim-no-sperms. The seeds on the plants are open to the air; not wrapped up the flower.
Angiosperms
Number of species: 400,000(!)
These are flowering plants, so you probably have a few of these in your house.
